Nowadays, many couples worldwide have no children for personal, financial, social reasons or due to fertility problems. In many cases, couples delay pregnancy leading to age-related infertility. They decide to postpone becoming parents mainly for career development and financial independence.

This situation is especially prominent in Greece. In 2020 the mean age of Greek women giving birth was 30.7, compared to the EU mean age
of 29.5. Also, in 2020, the total fertility rate in Greece was 1.39 live births per woman in comparison to the EU average of 1.50 (source: Eurostat – Table 1).

This statistic is much lower than the average number of live births (2.10) per woman required to keep the population size constant. Failure to maintain the population size can lead to an older society unable to contribute to the overall financial wealth.

Therefore, it is our duty to improve, expand, and make infertility services more accessible, in addition to increasing awareness of reproductive health in the Greek public. It is also our duty to provide scientific information to the young population regarding reproductive health from their first appointment with a specialist doctor, in order to help them make informed decisions about their future fertility and/or fertility preservation.
